Houston hospitals make strong showing on U.S. News & World Report list

U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals 2013-14 list features nine nationally ranked hospitals in Texas, including six in Houston.

Houston Methodist Hospital — previously known as The Methodist Hospital — was named No. 1 locally and in Texas, followed by St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, which ranked No. 2 both in the metro and in the state.

The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center ranked No. 3 in Houston, and was again named No. 1 in the nation for cancer care. M.D. Anderson ranked No. 1 in cancer care 10 times during the past 11 years.

The Houston-Baytown-Sugar Land metropolitan area has 99 hospitals, and Texas has more than 600, according to U.S. News. In addition to the state’s nine nationally ranked hospitals, another 39 met standards for strong performance within the state.

Houston Business Journal previously reported more hospital boards are expected to match greater portions of a CEO’s incentive package with improvements in quality.
